You could easily think that current turmoil inspired one Thai artist’s installation at the Bangkok Art Biennale 2020: a lineup of seven small porcelain military tanks, resembling German Leopard 2 units and intricately painted in a Chinese style.

But the artist, Wasinburee Supanichvoraparch, said his creative motivation was purely apolitical: The pieces are a homage to his family’s rich history of producing porcelain and earthenware, and to his fascination with a little-known 18th-century military exchange.
