Elina Brotherus

Elina Brotherus works in photography and moving image. Her work has been alternating between autobiographical and art-historical approaches. Photographs dealing with the human figure and the landscape, the relation of the artist and the model, gave way to images on subjective experiences in her recent bodies of work like 12 ans après, Annonciation and Carpe Fucking Diem.
Recently, she has been revisiting Fluxus event scores and other written instructions for performance-oriented art of the 1950s-70s. This brought her the Carte blanche PMU prize 2017 that was presented as a solo show Règle du jeu at the Pompidou Centre and published as a monograph of the same title. Another ongoing series is taking place in iconic private houses by architects like Alvar Aalto or Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Brotherus takes roles of various imagined characters, reactivates domestic architectural heritage and brings a human presence to these spaces that in architectural photography are always presented empty.
Brotherus has recently exhibited in Busan Art Museum; Férnan Gómez, Madrid; Kunst Haus Wien; Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark; MUCEM, Marseille; Musée Sursock, Beirut; Serlachius Museums, Finland, to name a few. She has published nine monographs and her work has been given prominence in a large number of art and photography publications.
