In 1999, Elena Brotherus was an artist-in-residence of the Musee Nicephore Niépce located in Chalon-sur-Saone, France. During her stay there, Brotherus created a seminal series of photographs called Suites Françaises (French Suites) (1999). The series consist of images in which she teaches herself French with the help of post-it stickers. It also deals with living in a foreign country and observing the culture and surroundings. In 2011, Brotherus was invited back to Charon-sur-Saone, where she stayed in the same monastery guesthouse as before. She photographed many of the same things that she experienced twelve years earlier, and the result was a series called 12 ans apres (12 Years Later) (2011-2012) in which the new images generate a poignant dialogue with the older ones. At the age of 40 and looking back on it all, everything was to her younger self, still an unknown future. The changes that took place over the passage of time can therefore be seen in this dialogue that originated with the Suites Françaises series for which Brotherus was awarded the Fotofinlandia Award in the year 2000.
