The four Martyrs (Earth, Air, Fire, Water) (2014) are derived from the permanent large-scale video installation Martyrs (Earth, Air, Fire, Water), unveiled at St Paul's Cathedral, London in 2014. The Greek word for martyr originally meant ‘witness’ and, in the contemporary world, the mass media have made us all witnesses to the sufferings of others. The past actions of martyrs critique our inactivity by exemplifying their capacity to bear pain, hardship, even death, to remain faithful to their values, beliefs, and principles. Accordingly, the four scenes shown here are not passive expressions of victimhood but exertions of the active characteristics of fortitude, perseverance, endurance and sacrifice as the body, tested to the limit, transcends the veil of darkness and death.
