In conceptual works, Christian Jankowski focuses on performance, film, video and photography, but also employs a variety of media, including painting, sculpture and drawing. Besides group exhibitions, the artist has had numerous solo exhibitions including Weather Flag (josegarcia, mx, 2020); Floating World (KCUA, 2018), (Petzel Gallery, 2018). In 2016, he curated the 11th edition of Manifesta, becoming the first artist to assume this role.
Jankowski initiates collaborations between contemporary visual art and other professional worlds such as those of religion, business, politics and entertainment. Protagonists from many fields inscribe themselves in Jankowski’s art. Through the embodiment of both sides – the public and the private sphere – by the media personality, the video installation Sender and Receiver simultaneously raises awareness for how global events affect the individual in very different ways. Not least considered as a ritual of (collective) gratitude and praise, Sender and Receiver makes it possible to transfer biographical information into a kind of social biography, thus documenting and spreading unheard stories far from the great pandemic canon of the 21st century. The work is carried out in close exchange with mass media formats and their production mechanisms. The focus lies in the collective invention and the questioning of its power: testing the image.
