hang Kechun, a well-known Chinese artist and photographer, studied art and design in his earlier days. After graduating, he worked as a designer in Chengdu before becoming interested in photography. In his photographic works, Zhang chooses to record images of landscapes that have the setting of contemporary Chinese national identity and inspired by Chinese artistic tradition. He continues to explore the landscapes of China while capturing their magnificent natural formations. Zhang has won many awards including the National Geographic Picks Global Prize in 2008, was nominated for Sony World Photography Awards in 2012 and 2013, and the pre-HSBC Pour la Photographie in 2014.
In his project Yellow River (2010-2013), Zhang originally had the concept of searching for the roots of his soul but this later turned into documenting the effects of modernization that took place along the river. Following that, in his next project Between the Mountains and Water (2014-2017), he focuses on the relationship between the people and the land on which they live and work. With tiny human figures in trance-like state set meaningfully against the vast natural landscape, questions arise as to what these people are thinking in such contexts and conditions. Could they be seeking some kind of mental or physical escape from the situation that they are facing?
