Since 1993 Massimo Bartolini has been working with the construction of spatial and temporal environments which have developed into various configurations, though they have maintained their character of perceptive devices. Each environment (such as a room of decompression, a spaceship or a pool) alters the normal conditions of experience that anchor our rational and behavioural certainties. In these rooms, the spatial conditions are influenced by walking paths, light sources, diffusion of sounds and perfumes that lead us to a multi-sensorial perception. Being structured as indoor spaces, these rooms often carefully define thresholds (doors, windows, window ledges) which are delimited by the external world. There is a need to represent one’s own habitat only when one cannot unconditionally adhere to an environment – when, that is, there is a need for a new adaptation to the context. For this reason, Bartolini’s working model finds its field of action in a concentration on the ground or in the floor structures, in the ‘floorness’ of minimalist matrix. The floor becomes a sort of topos around which all his work revolves because it is a function of being situated, being somewhere, of maintaining its equilibrium. For Bangkok Art Biennale, the work “Floating Floor (Raft)” reflects on migration, how a raft can become home and how this multitude of migrants is like a flock of birds, flying in search of a better place to live.
