Like Wat Arun, Wat Pho is a sacred enclosure based on Hindu-Buddhist cosmology. In the Sermon Hall is decorated in cinnamon red, marble white and glittering gold. The seated golden Buddha on the throne built during the Ayutthaya period is facing the sermon altar surrounded mirrors and lamps. Kapoor’s Push/Pull (2009) comprises of five tons of deep red wax and oil pigment is majestically placed on the Carrara marble floor. Push/Pull is about gravity and tension as well as volume and material. The sledge arm is pushed and pulled to form the soft dark red mass that is alluring and aggressive. Like insight meditation (vipassna), the rhythmic push-pull breathing control muscles and limbs for inhalation and exhalation. Circumambulatory walk around Push/Pull move us, physically and mindfully. We become aware of life and blood, mother and nature under the symbolic heavenly and astrological realms of the red and gold stars on the ceiling. Cinnamon red in Buddhist symbolism is the void and invisibility.
