Wat Phra Chetuphon (Wat Pho)

Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangk-halaram Rajwaramahawihan is commonly known as Wat Pho, and has its English name as Temple of the Reclining Buddha. Initiated to rebuild on an earlier temple site by the King Rama I, Wat Pho later became one of the most prominent temples in Thailand. Wat Pho is also considered the first public education centre in Thailand. The utmost significant element of the temple is the 46-metre-long Reclining Buddha, that is majestic in its size and beauty. Thus, in 2018, the Bangkok Art Biennale commissioned Jitsing Somboon to create Faithway (2018) the wearable artwork – in which Somboon designed the gowns in accordance to the rules and etiquettes of the temple for the visitor to borrow before entering the hall where the Reclining Buddha situated. The works by Pannapan Yodmanee, Phaptawan Suwannakudt, Haung Yong Ping, and Tawatchai Puntusawasdi translated the temple's history significance into forms of contemporary art.
