Cut my Tongue and Lips, 2018

Farhana Islam Tani is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily with installation and video art. Based in Dhaka, Tani takes influence from Bangladeshi cultural contents and draws inspiration from the women in her own family. Tani studied fine art at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Cranbrook Academy of Art. She participated in the 31st Festival Les Instants Vidéo (Marseille, 2018) and was featured in a number of group exhibitions in Bangladesh, China, France, and the USA.

“Let there be a gush of words as blood. Let words tumble and free fall. Climb up the well and through the gendered sieve...” is a mantra chanted by the artist when she wants to overcome the state of being “woman.” In the video Cut my tongue and lips (2018), Tani performs a ritualistic and repetitive task of braiding and un-braiding her hair. This is a symbolic act because having long hair reflect the status of being good woman. The video highlights the patriarchal structures in Asian cultures. The projection of the image of the artist, reflecting across the room through broken shards of mirror, forming a fragmented ethereal moving image, also underscores the constructs of suffocative suppression in women’s cultural image.

Cut my tongue and lips
