Choy Ka Fai’s multidisciplinary art practice situates itself at the intersection of dance, media art and performance. At the heart of his research is a continuous exploration of the metaphysics of the human body. Through research expeditions, pseudo-scientific experiments and documentary performances, Choy appropriates technologies and narratives to imagine new futures of the human body. From technological experiments, anthropological discoveries to dance experiences that swing from the futuristic to the paranormal, Choy’s productions are often infused with a sense of irreverence or the bizarre, suggesting possibilities that seem almost absurd. Humour is used as a device to simultaneously disarm and expose preconceptions towards dance. In this manner, it serves too, as a means to interrogate present realities around the human body.
The Cosmic Wander project researches on shamanistic dance cultures in Asia. Venturing into the region in search of the most spectacular and immersive trance experiences, Choy had met over 50 shamans and filmed extraordinary dance rituals, from the wilderness of Siberia to the mythological practices in Java. Presented at Bangkok Art Biennale 2020 is a work produced from the artist’s trip to Olkhon Island in Lake Baikal, the last stronghold of the North Asian shamans, titled Blue Sky Academy (2020). The work is both a travelogue and an artistic interpretation of contemporary shamanistic practices that are resurfacing with the rise of post-human consciousness. Installed as a pseudo travel agency, it is also a tongue-in-cheek commentary on consumable spiritual encounters and an experimentation in transcendent experiences of a future, virtual world, where lines between the spiritual and the secular, virtual and material, are blurred.
