Rirkrit Tiravanija’s practice comprises of sculpture, film, installation, public and private performances, teaching, and forms of public service and social actions. He has routinely overturned traditional exhibition formats to emphasize social interaction, through the sharing of everyday activities such as cooking, eating and reading. As platforms for these activities, he has designed architectural structures and interventions, presented both in galleries and public spaces. After graduating from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Tiravanija moved to Manhattan. Over the last three decades, Tiravanija’s work has been presented widely at biennales, museums and galleries around the world.
Tiravanija’s artwork Untitled 2020 (infinite attempts never concluded) is a labyrinthian bamboo installation outside of BACC that requires collective participation and human presence. Members of the public contribute to the work, however small, by reciprocating with their body and mind. The structure is nothing fancy, simply a single winding path surrounded by grid-like intricate bamboos laboriously tied by the hands of local and migrant workers. The maze becomes an enclosure for entrance and exit, visible and invisible, separation and inclusion. Through the slits of the bamboo we experience inside and outer space simultaneously. In the era of conflict, fear and schism, it is time to take refuge in order to heal and compromise.
