Kubra Khademi is an Afghan performance artist and a feminist based in Paris. Through her practice, Khademi explores her life as a refugee and a woman. She studied fine arts at Kabul University, before attending Beaconhouse National University in Lahore, Pakistan. In Lahore she began to create public performance, a practice she continued upon her return to Kabul, where her work actively responded to a male dominated society by extreme patriarchal politics. After performing her provocative piece known as Armor in 2015 on the streets of Kabul, surrounded by a horde of despising men, Khademi was forced to flee her home country. She currently lives in exile in Paris, France. In 2016 she was awarded an MFA Scholarship at Pantheon Sorbonne University and was given the title of Knight of art and literature (Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Letter) by the Ministry of French Culture.
Khademi has continued a search for vulnerability, through suffering, endurance or the reification of her body into an object. In her drawings and paintings, she mobilizes a fantastic imagination, where women look like nymphs who are subordinate creatures of desire and fertility. The works on paper depict naked bodies, hers or the one of her mother. Khademi explores the geography of bodies in order to paint the identity of her country, she lifts the veil of prohibitions and braves atrocities with the insolence and innocence of nudity.
