In Two Little Soldiers (2020), Ratanaruang is inspired by Guy de Maupassant’s Deux Amis (Two Friends) (1882). Two old friends who used to go fishing before the Franco-Prussian War, reminisce over glasses of absinthe at the time of the Siege of Paris in 1871. Ratanaruang’s story takes place at the Thai army camp in the remote countryside during the time of mob protests. Two rookie soldiers stationed at the garrison as the troops left for the city became bored. Their life became free as they smoke, play guitar and go fishing. Romance could take place any time and place. The two soldiers met the village girl and began conversation about opening a can of fish. They found refuge and peace as they went for a swim in the river. In the background, the broken sound from the radio transmitted news of the escalation of the mobs in Bangkok. Ratanaruang’s prints related to scenes of the two soldiers in the video are like recorded parallel events that are both fictional and real.
Ratanaruang deftly reflects in Two Little Soldiers the intimacy of individuals whose personality is often lost by stereotypes of the uniforms they wear. The two soldiers probably know or care little about Thai democracy with its long complicated historical paths with crazy demos. The country girl who symbolizes the landless farmers and the masses is also trapped in never ending endeavour.
